A big thank you goes out to everyone who went to the Perry Barr Ward Meeting, on Monday 13th August. It was great to see so many Supporters Club members there
After all the complaints about cricket in Perry Hall Park, and then about car parking for the Handsworth Carnival, a few of us thought that the subject of Speedway would be in for a rough ride. As it turned out, with neither Tony Mole or Brian Buck available, the Ambassadorial role was given to Supporters Club Chairman, Brian Bott.
Once Alan Orr of the Planning Dept had outlined the Planning Application, Brian added some very important details, which were generally very well received by the people in attendance. No-one there was left with any mis-understanding of the slightly ambiguous way in which the Planning Application was worded, and there wasn't a single serious complaint about the running of speedway at Perry Barr. Indeed it was rather amusing to see one elderly lady who was one of the most prominent complainers about cricket speaking out in favour of the speedway.
This meeting was never going to be decisive in the outcome of the Planning Application, but it would have left the impression on the Councillors that speedway has a lot of local support, and secondly, the meeting was not used as a launching pad for the complainers to get their campaign rolling.
In fairness, none of the major complainers were in attendance, else the meeting may have gone differently, but that said, you can only talk to the people who are there to listen, and in this respect, this meeting proved to be quite a welcome success.
