Birmingham Brummies 44 v Newcastle Diamonds 46
This second leg of the Premier Trophy Final was a disappointment to both the fans and the riders. The Brummies started the meeting needing to recover from a 22 point deficit in order to win the Trophy. Such a task is not unknown in speedway, so there was always some optimism that a surprise result could be achieved.
Unfortunately, the Brummies could not have had a worse start (apart from a 0-5) when the Diamonds started with 1-5 in the opening heat. To recover a 22 point deficit in 15 races suddenly became 26 points in 14 races.
The statistics for the meeting make interesting reading with the Brummies having three riders finish in double figures, against Newcastle’s two, and the Brummies’ reserves outscoring those of the Diamonds by 10 +3 to 7+1. The Brummies also had two 5-1 heat wins with the Diamonds having just one!
Unfortunately, rider replacement for Aaron Summers only produced 4 points and Justin Sedgmen was still struggling to regain his form of earlier in the season. The Brummies were never in front during the whole meeting and it was only a scintillating 5-1 in heat 15 by Jason Lyons and Richard Sweetman over Kenni Larsen and Rene Bach that kept the score to a respectable 44-46.
The Brummies never gave up the chase and Jason, Richard and Steve were all in good form. Over the two legs Newcastle were the better team and fully deserved their win.
